After moving to a new town and state, several hours away from friends and family and working at home, I decided to pick my crochet hooks back up. I'd learned how to crochet years ago from my great-grandmother, and had continued on and off for several years. After the move with my now husband due to his job, I knew I needed something to keep myself occupied as I was completely away from anyone I had ever known. The main place you meet people is work, so I was working from home and that eliminated that possibility really quick. Crocheting was something I could do and feel like I was doing something with my time besides baking, (which I also adore doing). 

After a while, I had started to improve my crochet techniques and started testing patterns for several designers. I then had started making a few of my own creations and selling the finished products. I had been asked multiple times to write up a pattern, because I had started with scarves, and everyone can use a good scarf. After speaking with my best friend, she and my husband both convinced me that yes, I should 100% make and design patterns. I could easily just start off with my scarf designs and see where it takes me. I had also always been obsessed with mythology since about 4th grade, right off the bat I decided that I would have my names of patterns based off mythology and the zodiac. My first several designs were based on the zodiac and they just kept building from there.  

I started expanding more into blankets and had always really worked off bulky yarn. They work up really quick, and the stitch definition and squish factor just did it for me. Blankets have always been a favorite as well, because even though they take a bit of time to complete, everyone can use one. Its something that even if you don't keep it for yourself, giving a blanket with love in every stitch is always a welcome present. My family still has blankets that my great-great grandmother crocheted and several that my great-grandmother made. They are treasured and handled with the utmost care in our family. 

A little over a year ago, I did a test for another awesome maker. She had made a new tapestry style sweater. I had never tried tapestry crochet, and had been wanting to for a time, but didn't know where to start. This sweater is still one of my favorites and the credit to me starting in the tapestry crochet technique 100% goes to this sweater. You could easily say "and that's all she wrote," because after that the majority of all my designs have been tapestry, as to me, the possibilities are endless. There's really no end in sight to what you can't make with a chart and some yarn. I now try to make what gives me inspiration out in the world and brighten it up a bit, even if it's just with a splash of color.

1665 yards of The Hook Nook Yummy yarn (or your second favorite bulky yarn)

Pattern

My inspiration for this particular design was I wanted something to look similar to wheat (hence the name). In a lot of mythology they reference wheat, especially in one of my favorite stories. Demeter was the goddess of wheat and the harvest. She isn't as well known as her daughter Persephone. When Persephone was taken to the underworld by Hades, Demeter demanded that the Olympians go to the underworld and bring back her daughter. She sat in a temple and withheld the harvest from mankind and caused a large drought because no one would stand up to Hades. Once mankind reached an all time low and seemed there was no hope, the Olympians, led by Zeus decided to help Demeter. Once they went to "rescue" Persephone they found, while in the underworld she had consumed 3 pomegranate seeds. Due to this she could come back with her mother for a portion of the year and the other portion she had to reside in the underworld. Consumption of foods in the underworld irrevocably binds a god there. This is why we have Winter, as Persephone goes to live in the underworld with Hades and Demeter withdraws her blessings over the land, where nothing can grow. 

Tips

Chain 1 before the start of every row as your turn chain. This does not count as a stitch.


This is worked using tapestry crochet. This means you’ll be changing colors but carrying the yarn across the project

Attach tassels every 2-3 stitches across the top and bottom alternating colors.
