Tunisian Chill Cover Up Pattern

7/9/2019

Hi makers!

My name is Stephanie and I am the designer and maker behind By Stephanie Erin. I am so so so excited to be back on The Hook Nook today sharing my brand new Tunisian Chill Cover Up!

I started crocheting about 4 years ago when I was at a point in my life I wasn’t very happy. My job was not fulfilling me, I was in a bad relationship and I felt like I had no control over a lot going on in my life. My mom was a knitter so I had been exposed to the possibilities of yarn, but the cuteness of amigurimi drew me to hooking. Being able to create items with just yarn and a hook gave me such joy and I started to change my perspective on my life.

I’ve always been a creative, I paint and draw, I used to run a nail art blog (http://sincerelystephaniee.blogspot.com), but yarn has completely captured my heart. Last year I decided to try my hand at designing and turning my sketches into garments and I feel like I truly found my passion. The joy of writing a pattern and seeing others create it is unmatched. I also really love grading a garment pattern! It’s like a puzzle trying to find all the right stitch counts and when someone who is not my size is able to create the same garment and seeing the joy on their face when they model it has to be one of the best feelings around.

Last year I was itching to learn something new and tried my hand at Tunisian crochet! The drape that the fabric creates is totally unique in comparison to crochet and I knew that it would be perfect to create unique garments with. I wanted to design a fun summer cover up that could also double as a dress if you wanted it to! Tunisian was the perfect method to do this. The Tunisian Chill cover up was inspired by the water. I always feel more relaxed when I’m near a lake, the ocean or even a pool. I wanted to make something that would ooze relaxation while still looking absolutely fabulous! So grab your Tunisian hooks and let’s get hooking! Please share your progress photos, follow and tag me @by.stephanie.erin on Instagram. I can’t wait to see your versions!

The pattern is written as follows, XS [S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X]

The sizing is based on bust size with -1-0 inches of ease at the bust, increasing in an a-line to 6” of positive ease. Sizing is as follows, if you are between sizes it’s recommended to size up.

XS (up to 30 inches)

S  (31-34 inches)

M (35-38 inches)

L (39-42 inches)

XL (43-46 inches)

2X (47-50 inches)

3X (51-54 inches)

4X (55-58 inches)

5X (59-62 inches)

Notes

This dress is worked in 1 piece and then seamed together along the side. Straps are added at the end.

Watch the videos above before starting your pattern. This pattern starts with the Offset Star stitch, and then alternates between that and the Cross stitch.

The dress is designed to be 25.5 inches long from the end of your bust. Each lace section is 6 rows long and is approximately 4” in length. Each X section is 6 rows long and approximately 2” in length. You can alter the length but reducing or increasing the number of rows in each section. If you are reducing the number of rows in the lace section, ensure that your last return pass is the same as row 7. You can complete this return pass after either a row 3 or 4.

If you are altering the dress to be longer by adding additional lace and X repeats, then do this at the beginning. Repeat rows 2-7 and then repeat row 8, 6 times. Do not start the decreases until the top of the work lines up just above your knee.

We will now do our first decrease row. Each decrease section removes 2 sts from the total number. We will be doing this 3 times in each decrease row reducing by 6 sts each time. I have provided stitch counts for where to do the decreases evenly, however since this is going to be a tube you can do the decreases really anywhere as long as they are somewhat spaced out. If you don’t want to count as much just ensure you do 3 decrease sections, ([Skip next st, Tunisian Simple Stitch under next 2 sts. Tunisian Simple Stitch in skipped stitch] twice) in each decrease row. Remember to watch this video (https://youtu.be/-nMjFD-lPi4) to see how to do the decreases exactly!

[Skip next st, Tunisian Simple Stitch under next 2 sts. Tunisian Simple Stitch in skipped stitch] twice. Repeat from * to ** until 2 sts remain. Tunisian Simple Stitch, Tunisian Simple Stitch under both strands of last st. 119 [131, 143, 161, 179, 197, 209, 227, 245] loops on hook

Return: ch 1, *yarn over, pull through 2. Repeat from * across until 1 loop remains on the hook.

Row 48-49: *skip next st, Tunisian Simple Stitch in next stitch. Tunisian Simple Stitch in skipped stitch. Repeat from * across until 2 sts remain. Tunisian Simple Stitch, Tunisian Simple Stitch under both strands of last st. 119 [131, 143, 161, 179, 197, 209, 227, 245] loops on hook.

Return: ch 1, *yarn over, pull through 2. Repeat from * across until 1 loop remains on the hook.

Row 50-55: Repeat Row 2-7. 119 [131, 143, 161, 179, 197, 209, 227, 245] loops on hook.

We will now start the bust section of the dress. We will be doing 2 decrease rows so that there is no ease around your bust. Depending on the size of your bust you may wish to decrease further so there is negative around your bust. If you wish to do so then add as many decrease sections, ([Skip next st, Tunisian Simple Stitch under next 2 sts. Tunisian Simple Stitch in skipped stitch] twice.) as needed. This will ensure that your Xs still line up properly. Also depending on your bust size you may wish to add more or less rows before binding off. If your bust is larger you may want to add additional rows for more coverage, or if your bust is smaller you may want to have less rows in this section.

Row 56: *skip next st, Tunisian Simple Stitch in next stitch.

This is our first decrease row. We will be decreasing by 21 [19, 17, 21, 25, 29, 27, 31, 35] sts. This should give us exact measurements for no ease around your bust. This is 10 [9, 8, 10, 12, 14, 13, 15, 17] decrease sections. Again as long as you do the required number of sections, the number of sts between each decrease section is not important.

Row 57: *skip next st, Tunisian Simple Stitch in next stitch. Tunisian Simple Stitch in skipped stitch. Repeat from * 3 [3, 5, 6, 4, 2, 8, 4, 4] times. [Skip next st, Tunisian Simple Stitch under next 2 sts. Tunisian Simple Stitch in skipped stitch] twice.

** skip next st, Tunisian Simple Stitch in next stitch. Tunisian Simple Stitch in skipped stitch. Repeat 2 [4, 5, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4] times. [Skip next st, Tunisian Simple Stitch under next 2 sts. Tunisian Simple Stitch in skipped stitch] twice. Repeat from ** 9 [8, 7, 9, 11, 13, 12, 14, 16] times

Repeat from * until 2 sts remain. Tunisian Simple Stitch under next st and under both strands of last st. 98 [112, 126, 140, 154, 168, 182, 196, 210] loops on hook

Return: ch 1, *yarn over, pull through 2. Repeat from * across until 1 loop remains on the hook.

Row 58-59: *skip next st, Tunisian Simple Stitch in next stitch. Tunisian Simple Stitch in skipped stitch. Repeat from * across until 1 st remain. Tunisian Simple Stitch under both strands of last st. 98 [112, 126, 140, 154, 168, 182, 196, 210] loops on hook.

Return: ch 1, *yarn over, pull through 2. Repeat from * across until 1 loop remains on the hook.

This is our second decrease row. We will be decreasing by 8 sts, (4 decrease sections). This will reduce the ease to be slightly negative depending on where your bust falls in each size range. Feel free to omit this decrease or add more decreases if you have a smaller bust.

Row 60: *skip next st, Tunisian Simple Stitch in next stitch. Tunisian Simple Stitch in skipped stitch. ** Repeat from * to ** 7 [8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 16, 19] times. [Skip next st, Tunisian Simple Stitch under next 2 sts. Tunisian Simple Stitch in skipped stitch] twice.  Repeat from * to ** 6 [8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18] times. [Skip next st, Tunisian Simple Stitch under next 2 sts. Tunisian Simple Stitch in skipped stitch] twice.  Repeat from * to ** 6 [8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18] times. [Skip next st, Tunisian Simple Stitch under next 2 sts. Tunisian Simple Stitch in skipped stitch] twice. Repeat from * to ** 6 [8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18] times. Do Not Fasten Off.

Turn your work so that the RS is facing each other and the short side is lined up. I find it helpful to use stitch markers at the start and end of each lace and cross section. You are forming the tube that will be your dress.

Slip stitch through both sides in each stitch from the top to the bottom. Fasten off.

You now have a strapless tube dress! If you want to have straps then continue on.

Straps

Try on your dress, with the seam underneath an arm. If you would prefer to have your seam on your back, you can position the dress so it is in the middle of your back. Take two stitch markers and mark on the front where you want your straps to fall. They should line up approximately with where your bra straps would fall.

Ensure that you are marking in the centre of an X. This will create a nice line for your straps versus in-between the Xs.

There are 2 different strap types you can create with this dress. Decide which type you want and continue on.

Spaghetti Straps

If you have help, while wearing your dress you can get someone to mark where you would like your straps to fall on your back as well. If you are alone, then take the dress off and lay it flat on the floor or a table with the seam where it will lie on you. Mark the stitch on the back that lines up with where your marked stitch on the front is.

With 5mm hook, attach yarn to the marked stitch. Ch 1 and sc into that st. *Turn your work and insert your hook underneath loop on the left of the stitch. Pull up a loop and complete sc. Repeat from * until your strap is your desired length. This will be approximately 14” however everybody is different so you may need to make your strap anywhere between 13”-16”

Once your strap is your desired length sc into the marked st on the back. Fasten off.

Repeat for second strap.

Tie Up Back

With 5mm hook, attach yarn to the marked stitch. Ch 1 and sc into that st. *Turn your work and insert your hook underneath loop on the left of the stitch. Pull up a loop and complete sc. Repeat from * until your strap is your desired length. This will be approximately 22”. You want your strap to be long enough to tie a bow with on the other side.

Once your strap is your desired length then fasten off.

Repeat for second strap.

Finishing

Weave in all ends.

If you want to wear this as a dress you can line the inside with a similar colour fabric. Hand sew the fabric to the bottom of the bust.

Enjoy your new dress!
