Huipei is a practicing family physician hailing from sunny Singapore, mother to a 3-year daughter and an avid self-taught crocheter for the past 6 years. She particularly enjoys working with miniature amigurumis and of late, draws her inspiration in making interactive toy sets for toddlers from her daughter! When she’s not playing with her daughter or seeing patients, she sometimes indulges in crocheting little yarnlings and making stop motion animations of them. Ice Cream Babies Crochet Pattern by Huipei Zhang

Hi there, I’m Huipei from Pocket Yarnlings ! I’m so excited for this Hook Nook feature! I started out doing little amigurumis as a side hobby to relieve some stress from work and as I made more and more of them, I realized the possibilities of creations are endless and incorporating special stitches usually used in textured garments like bobble stitches and popcorn stitches can be worked into amigurumi as well! Feel free to follow me on Instagram to see my latest tutorials and patterns.

My latest pattern includes my whole idea of making little miniature sets interactive for toddlers to play with. I was inspired by those wooden sets you often see for toddlers and I figured I could totally make a yarn version of it! Here in sunny Singapore, we do not have the four seasons so the swimsuits can be out all year round, except for rainy seasons. So, I decided to come up with Polly in a swimsuit buying ice cream from Buster in an ice cream truck!

For most of my humanoid amis, I tend to make them in one continuous stitch like for Polly and Buster. The ice cream truck, on the other hand, does involve crocheting separate pieces and some amount of assembly work at the end. To firm up the sides of the truck, I used some recycled non-slip mats as inserts, which are preferable to using cardboards, mostly because they are waterproof and washable for children.

Assembly

Get ready the separate pieces for assembly:

Side panels - 1 with no opening, 1 with opening

Back external piece + back internal piece (sewn down)

Using whipstitch method, first sew down the side panel with no opening to the back external piece.

Start off by aligning the front of the truck, meaning the front bumper first, then the front bonnet and front window. Remember to line up the pieces together nicely before sewing them together. Then move onto the base middle segment and then the posterior window door.

After completing one side, you should get a C-shaped box from the top view. Then proceed on to attach the other side panel with opening, similarly starting from the front bumper/ bonnet/ window, then the middle segment and finally the posterior window door.

Finally, end off with sewing down the lid cover only along the posterior edge of the truck, so that you would be able to flip it open to put Polly and Buster inside.

Detailing

Whether you choose to do the detailing before or after assembly is a personal preference. In this case, I actually did the assembly first then the detailing. It helps during the pattern designing process to see what looks nicer.

However, I would suggest adding in the detailing first before the assembly as the sewing on process for the individual small parts can be slightly more difficult after the truck has been assembled.

The detailing would include the following:

Wheels on either side

Ice-cream lid handle

Window trimmings, on either side

Mini ice-cream appliques over the side panel with no opening

Front and back headlights

Wipes over front window

The final truck should be fairly firm because of the plastic non-slip inserts and there should be enough room to place Polly and Buster inside.

Hope it was fun making Polly and the Ice Cream Truck! The little babies should work up really quickly, the truck on the other hand has quite a bit of assembling.
